MP visits before school fitness club

Fully prepared and dressed in his tracksuit, Vernon Coaker MP visited Westdale Junior School, Mapperley, on Tuesday 4th April 2006, to see their before school fitness club in full swing. The club offers children from the school the chance to develop their fundamental sports skills, improve their fitness levels and have fun, followed by a well-earned breakfast.

The club is very popular with the children and runs once a week. Mr Coaker MP was very impressed with the high levels of ability of the children and their obvious enthusiasm and enjoyment for the activities. “This is a great idea and really helps to promote healthy activity for children” he said. As part of its work for the Healthy Schools Gold Standard the school is encouraging its pupils, parents and staff to adopt a healthier lifestyle through exercise and food choices. This club is just one of a wide range of sporting opportunities for pupils at Westdale Junior School.

After half an hour of challenging footwork and exercise, the children and one slightly weary MP headed to the dining room for a breakfast of cereals, toast and a drink. “I feel more awake for lessons and I’m not hungry during the morning because I actually eat all my breakfast now” commented a Year 5 child who has attended the club from the outset.

Breakfast finished and the children head off to their classrooms, wide awake, fuelled up and ready to learn.
