Arts and Book Week 1999

Our school had an Arts and Book Week in the week before our Spring Half Term Holiday. It was organised by Mrs. Harrison and there were special events and activities every day.

Years 3, 4 and 5 had a visit from Martin Wright, a book illustrator. He gave us challenges such as to remember as many things as we could that can be found on a post box. He showed us some of his drawings and cartoons and then we had to make up a picture-story. We did a cartoon story-board all about a robber.

Year 6 visited the local library for a workshop with a poet called Steve Stickley.

When we arrived we were greeted by the librarians and shown where the coats were to be put. Then we walked through an archway into the biggest room of the library to meet Steve Stickley.

Steve began by chanting a poem to us called "In the Night!" and we had the chance to join in with the chorus. Steve had made up a poem about his Grandfather, describing him as a panda and he asked us to make up a similar poem, with a partner, about someone we knew.

Near the end we were allowed to have a little game, again with a partner. It consisted of someone pulling out a nonsense word out of an imaginary glass bottle. Then, the person who pulled it out had to try and say in front of the whole class.

The Wheldon School Swing Band came to our school to play some music. The instrumentalists that came played the drums, piano, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, clarinets and flutes.

The Wheldon students also presented a Victorian Music Hall. There were jokes, songs and a melodrama.

On the last day the Fantasy Puppet Show came to our school with home-made puppets created from bits of string and fabric from around the house. Some of the puppets were glow-in-the-dark ones. They glowed because of an ultra violet light on the front of the puppet stage. The puppets danced to music and one of them told jokes. The best bit of the presentation was when the ultra violet lights were put on for the first time.

As part of Book Week, since this was the National Year of Reading, 6J wrote letters to famous people to find out what books they enjoyed as children. To find out the titles that some famous people liked when they were young, follow the link below:
