King Fernando’s Journey

(A verb-phrase poem using ideas from "King Fernando" by John Batholomew)

People queuing and squashing on eagerly,
Passengers chattering excitedly,
Men reading "The Gleaner" avidly,
Children screaming loudly,
Joe driving furiously:

Zooming down hills swiftly,
Sweeping round corners majestically,
Crawling up slopes slowly,
Tearing into sharp hairpin bends dangerously,
Horn blasting continuously,
Gears grinding and squealing sickeningly,
Brakes screaching loudly.

The Elephant

Gigantic, floppy ears,
Wrinkled, rubbery skin,
Long skinny trunk,

Massive, decaying tusks,
Large, chunky legs,
Wide, cushioning feet,
Enormous, fat belly,
Thin, wiry tail.

by Richard and Luke

The Lion

Glary, shiny eyes,
Black, spotty nose,
Sharp, yellow teeth,
Long, slimy tongue,
Orange, frilly mane,
Strong, muscular legs,
Powerful, rugged back,
Long, hairy tail.

by Elliott and Jake

Tennis

(A poem using active and passive verbs)

Henman hits the ball,
Rusedski rallies the ball,
Henman dives for the ball,
The ball boy collects the ball,
Rusedski bounces the ball,
Rusedski serves the ball,
Henman stretches for the ball,
Rusedski jumps for the ball,
Henman wins the game.

The ball is hit,
The ball is rallied,
The ball is dived for,
The ball is collected,
The ball is bounced,
The ball is served,
The ball is stretched for,
The ball is jumped for,
The game is won.

Football

(A poem using active and passive verbs)

Owen dribbles the ball,
Shearer passes the ball,
Beckham crosses the ball,
Neville blasts the ball,
Seaman dives for the ball,
Fowler scores.
The referee blows the whistle.

The ball is dribbled,
The ball is passed,
The ball is crossed,
The ball is blasted,
The ball is dived for,
A goal is scored,
The whistle is blown.
